Today is different. It is English Calendar New Year’s Day. Our first reaction was as under.

In British times, Indians had the habit of visiting the homes of British officers in New Year’s Day and collect Gifts. Year by year it became very popular and people stood in queues on New year’s day in front of their homes.

Some natives, especially from Arcot region wanted to change this. They declared Lord Muruga of Thiruthani as their ‘Durai’ and stated visiting Lord Murugan of Thiruthani on English New Year’s Day. They declared Lord Murugan as their ‘Durai’. So Murugan came to be known as ‘Durai’ and name of Durai Murugan, Duraisami, Durairaj became popular. The habit of 365 steps of Thiruthani Murugan temple being sanctified came into existence.

எனவே திருவெம்பாவை குளியலாடும் படலத்தை மொத்தமாக பாடி நானும் திருப்பள்ளி எழுச்சிக்குள் நுழைந்து பாடல் ஆரம்பிக்கலாம். இந்த கர்ண கடூர குரல் பாட்டை கேப்பதும் கேட்காமல் இருப்பதும் அவரவர் இஷ்டம்.
